Requisits: The student must have a minimum knowledge in databases and expertise in designing code in its language
Descripció: The student will collaborate with the PAU Data Management team in the design and implementation of a database for a galaxy survey. This database will contain a very large number of entries corresponding to the galaxies, stars and other stellar objects found during the survey. Each entry may contain as well a large number of columns as a result of a multi-filter system and several
post processing releases. The system will be held in a Grid Computing environment and should be scalable
and updateable. The type of queries that will be requested for the scientific target should be taken
into account in the design of the architecture. The challenge of this design relies on the optimization
of an extensive and changing database.

masters - Characterization of primitive meteorites: clues on the aggregation of chondrites

Requisits: Undergraduate thesis project. Per a més informació, contactar amb el Dr. Trigo-Rodriguez: trigo@ieec.uab.es
Descripció: Chondrites are among the most primitive meteorites arrived to our laboratories. Chondrite-forming materials were part of the protoplanetary disk from which the solar system planets formed, and its study provides clues on the origin of the solar system, and also on the physical processes occurred before planet formation. Several thin sections of primitive (undifferentiated) meteorites will be studied by using different instruments. The main goals of this research will be obtaining the size distribution of the components preserved in chondrites, study the role of aggregation and compaction, and to identify their mineralogy. These components are refractory inclusions, chondrules, and fine dust materials of the meteorite matrix. Once characterized, different minerals that could be good candidates to carry on isotopic anomalies from nearby stars will be also tentatively identified.

espacial LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna; ESA-NASA) detectara. L'objectiu d'aquest treball es utilitzar la informació de
simulacions d'aquests sistemes i produir visualitzacions en tres dimensions que capturin la principal informació sobre la trajectòria
i emissió de radiació gravitatòria.

masters - A Novel Real-Time System-On-Chip Platform Development Applied to an Integrated Inertial Navigation System

Requisits: The combination of GPS and IMS provides many complimentary characteristics that overcome the limitations of the individually sensor system. But due to the different signal frequency and error model of each sensor, it produces another problem, the data fusion of these two systems. Over the last 16 years, data fusion has taken an important part of the investigation of the navigation system. There are mainly two parts of algorithm are paid attention for-- alignment and calibration. Nowadays more and more applications require not only the accuracy but also the rapid response. With the necessary to insure the long-term on-board working precision, it results in a complication between the time-consuming and complex calculation in the system design. Therefore timing has become a critical problem.
Descripció: This work proposes a solution to develop a real-time on-board platform of an integrated inertial navigation system (IINS), in virtue of the SOC technology to finalize the velocity and position estimation of vehicle. In the hardware aspect, this platform integrated IMS and GPS with a calibration system to get the balance of the low cost and high accuracy. In the software aspect, this system platform addresses a new parallel structure to separate the system design into three modules, like Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipeline Stages (MIPS) structure, to adapt the timing consummation and signal frequency between each module.

masters - MEMS and System-on-chip integration Applied to IMU to develop an Inertial Navigation System

Requisits: With the development of the MEMS technology, inertial measurement component, which
sense either acceleration or angular rate are required more and more in the commercial
market at present. Compared with the classical sensor system, MEMS inertial sensors
hold the advantages such as small, strong, accurate, flexible and easy to implement into
the wireless system. Also with its price keep on dropping, people focus on its application
more and more in vehicle inertial navigation system applied in air, marine and land.
However, in most cases, this kind of inertial system is embedded into ad-hoc system,
where a set of sensors are placed in fixed directions, and the data analysis depends on the
priori information or fixed constraints. As a result it requires high cost in the hardware
and software design with a low reuse capability and limited by the specify application.
Descripció: This thesis proposes a solution to cooperate system-on-chip technology with MEMS
technology to develop an inertial navigation system platform with IMU and GPS, which
is adaptable into any device or interface for the inertial navigation system and easy to be
transplanted into any future target technology. This IMU with six freedom degrees can
provide the information of acceleration and angular rate of all three axes, equipped with
FPGA to capture raw data from sensors, store them into the memory and analyze them by
NIOS2 processor at the next process. In addition, there is a complete communication
system inside the FPGA, using the NIOS2 processor to control the data transmission
between GPS, IMU and memory, waiting for integrating other measurements to realize
all kinds of the inertial information like velocity, position and attitude of vehicle in future.
